Japanese Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus xanthodryas breeds throughout Japan south of Hokkaido, with migrants passing through eastern China. Very rare Shanghai. Very similar to Kamchatka Leaf Warbler P. examinandus and Arctic Warbler P. borealis. Averages more yellowish below and greenish above, these distinctions being most readily apparent in fresh plumage, when eyebrow and throat usually bright yellow. Vocalizations differ considerably. Song softer and more fluid than Arctic and lacks 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 beat of Kamchatka and is more melodious. Call similar in pitch to Kamchatka but buzzier. — Craig Brelsford
