American Wigeon Mareca americana, California, USA, January. Breeding male readily distinguished from Eurasian Wigeon M. penelope by glossy dark green eyestripe and white forehead. American Wigeon breeds northern temperate North America, occasionally also extreme northeast Russia. Vagrant to China coast (Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hong Kong). Recorded Beijing. American Wigeon, female, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida, USA, January. Female American Wigeon distinguished from Eurasian Wigeon by thin black border at base of bill. Also has paler grey head and darker eye patch, giving more masked appearance. In Asia, vagrant American Wigeon commonly seen associating with Eurasian Wigeon, and American x Eurasian hybrids frequently noted. (Craig Brelsford)
